Bulukumba, Beritabulukumba.com – The traditional Pinisi boat construction is still ongoing in the Bonto Bahari District, precisely in the Pinisi Boat Maker’s area.

Pinisi has been recognized as a part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to its cultural significance.

Thanks to the reliability of the Pinisi boats and their skilled seafarers, Bulukumba is affectionately known as ‘Butta Panrita Lopi,’ the Land of Expert Boat Makers.

The Pinisi Nusantara successfully completed a journey across the Pacific Ocean, reaching Vancouver, Canada, on July 9, 1986.

Docked at Marine Plaza, the Pinisi Nusantara received numerous visitors from the local Vancouver community.

Visitors are in awe of the traditional wooden boat’s remarkable feat in crossing the mighty Pacific Ocean.

The motto of the brave Bugis-Makassar sailors, which resonates with most of the Bulukumba community, is ‘Sekali Layar Terkembang, Pantang Biduk Surut ke Pantai,’ symbolizing their determination to stand firm after making decisions. These sailors hold honesty and responsibility in high regard.

Due to their excellent sailing skills, many fishermen from Bulukumba have achieved success abroad, crossing seas to countries like Malaysia and the Philippines.

The term ‘Pinisi’ refers to the sail (rig), masts, sails, and cordage configuration of a specific type of Indonesian sailing ship.

The Pinisi boats have two main masts with seven sails, symbolizing the ancestral ability of Indonesians to traverse the world’s seven oceans.

Most Pinisi boats are built by the Konjo-speaking people of the Ara village in the Bontobahari District, Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, and are widely used by Bugis and Makassar sailors as cargo ships.

Before the wind-powered transport gradually faded in the 1970s/80s due to the motorization of Indonesia’s traditional trading fleet, the Pinisi boats with their sail systems were the largest sailboats in Indonesia.
